The Georgian Townhouse, Walmgate, York

Project Summary

Our Client is both Heritage Consultant and Developer having bought the property with the sole intention of restoring it to a Georgian Townhouse.

The design challenge was how to create a period frontage in place of the 20th C shopfront. To the rear, rudimentary single storey extensions presented the opportunity for something different by way of replacement.

Our collaborative approach with Client and City of York Council Conservation Department resolved to utilise historical records and local physical evidence to arrive at an appropriate period reconstruction of the frontage.

To the rear, a more contemporary application of historical material reference creates a modern living space.

The success of the project is recognised in the York Design Awards 2023 as winner of the John Shannon Conservation Award.
